The proposal requires Board members to:

  • support Board decisions publicly
  • avoid promoting competing agendas
  • avoid conduct undermining Union unity

…after decisions are made.

Why this is controversial

This language can be interpreted in two very different ways:

Benign interpretation

  • Standard expectation of collective leadership.

Aggressive interpretation

  • Board members could be disciplined for publicly disagreeing with leadership.

Many union activists would see this as potentially chilling dissent.
